Position Summary

The Domestic Violence Shelter Advocate plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, stability, and well-being of individuals and families seeking shelter and crisis support. This full-time position provides direct crisis intervention, hotline coverage, and shelter operations support using trauma-informed, survivor-centered practices. The Advocate works collaboratively with a dedicated team to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all clients.

Location: Preble County, Ohio (Shelter location is confidential for client safety.)

Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour

Schedule Requirement: Your expected schedule will include three shifts from Monday to Friday, from 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM, along with mandatory availability on Saturday and Sunday. This role requires a commitment to being present and responsive, making each day an opportunity for meaningful interaction and assistance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Utilize crisis stabilization and de-escalation techniques to support client safety and emotional well-being.

• Operate and respond to the Preble County Domestic Violence Hotline, providing immediate guidance, crisis intervention, and safety planning.

• Assess, orient, and facilitate the intake of new shelter residents, clearly communicating available services, shelter guidelines, and expectations.

• Respond promptly and professionally to client emergencies during scheduled shifts and while on-call.

• Perform daily shelter operations to ensure a safe and orderly environment, including facility safety checks, cleanliness, and organization of supplies and donations.

• Make appropriate referrals to community agencies and external services based on individualized client needs.

• Support and consistently enforce shelter policies to promote fairness, accountability, and security.

• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client documentation using electronic record-keeping systems in compliance with agency and contract requirements.

• Deliver excellent client service through compassionate communication, active listening, and consistent follow-through.

• Maintain professional boundaries and uphold strict confidentiality at all times.

• Attend required state trainings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.

• Participate in Miami Valley Community Action Partnership (MVCAP) outreach activities and events as assigned.

• Contribute to a cooperative, respectful, and supportive team environment through clear communication and collaboration.

• Uphold ethical standards and treat all clients with dignity and respect.

• Follow all agency policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

• Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong crisis response skills, professionalism, and a trauma-informed approach while working independently during evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications and Relevant Background

• High School Diploma or GED required.

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in domestic violence services, crisis intervention, shelter services, or a related human services field.

• Strong understanding of domestic violence dynamics and trauma-informed care.

• Proven ability to manage crisis situations, de-escalate conflict, and communicate effectively with individuals in distress.

• Experience with electronic documentation and record-keeping systems.

• Ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic under pressure.

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.

• CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
